Activités d’Octobre et Novembre

Ces deux derniers mois, nous avons été occupés à Siguatepeque, Honduras, et à Chimaltenango, Guatemala. Cette période a aussi été marquée par des élections durement contestées, pour le gouvernement national et pour les mairies.

Avec le Foyer d’Enfants

Depuis un peu plus de deux mois, nous avons Roberto chez nous. Il a 17 ans, et l’équipe de Vida y Libertad est à la recherché d’une nouvelle option pour lui.  Nous avons eu de bonnes conversations avec Roberto concernant son état spirituel, en faisant un culte en famille avec lui. À chaque fois, dans la lecture biblique, chacun partage ce que nous avons trouvé qui touche nos vies, et chacun choisit un verset à mémoriser avant le prochain culte en famille. Roberto participe de bon cœur.

Lise est allée quelques fois pour faire des études bibliques avec le personnel. Samedi matin, le 30 novembre, elle a accompagné une dizaine d’enfants du Foyer à un camp de jour, et elle a fini par y passer la journée, puisqu’ils ont eu besoin d’elle pour aider avec le programme. (Les gens de l’Amérique Centrale auraient beaucoup à nous enseigner concernant les relations humaines, mais l’organisation n’est pas toujours leur point fort).

Avec l’Église

Lise continue à enseigner une classe d’école du dimanche, ensemble avec une autre dame (elles prennent chacune son tour), et elle participe dans le programme d’ AWANA , enseignant les “ositos” (oursons). John et Lise participent tous les deux dans les groupes d’hommes et groupes de femmes les vendredis soirs. John prêche occasionnellement au groupe d’hommes, et Lise devait prêcher au groupe de femmes ce vendredi soir passé, mais la soirée est devenue une veillée de deuil pour une sœur qui est décédée le même matin.

Thelma

Thelma a été opérée pour un cancer en janvier passé, et les médecins lui avaient donné environ trois mois à vivre.. Elle a combattu le cancer tout au long de l’année, et à un certain point il semblait avoir une lueur d’espoir, mais en suite elle a dû passer par une deuxième série de chimiothérapie. Elle nous a laissé pour rejoindre son Sauveur vendredi matin le 29 novembre. Il y a eu une veillée pour elle cette nuit-là, et l’édifice de l’église était absolument plein. Le pasteur, Hector, a prêché un excellent sermon, avec compassion, tout en présentant l’évangile clairement. Samedi matin, le 30 novembre, on a eu le service funéraire et l’enterrement. Encore, un grand nombre de personnes a pu entendre l’évangile, autant durant le service à l’église comme au cimetière.  Priez pour le mari, Francisco, qui porte bien son deuil, mais qui aura certainement un temps difficile devant lui. Ils ont deux enfants, Daniel et Yvette, qui sont de jeunes ados. Cela doit être une épreuve terrible pour eux de perdre leur mère si tôt.

Principes Fondamentaux à Siguatepeque

Nous continuons avec les Principes Fondamentaux à l’église Baptiste Hermon, ayant complété la première série de cours. Nous planifions une graduation pour le 22 décembre. C’est vraiment encourageant de voir l’enthousiasme des élèves. Fabricio en est vraiment excité, appliquant la matière à sa propre vie, et il à hâte de conduire d’autres à travers la matière. Le pasteur Hector a décidé d’utiliser cette série comme programme officiel de disciplat, voulant qu’autant les vieux croyants comme les nouveaux passent à travers ces cours. Ce premier groupe, donc, sera le fer de lance, dans lequel quelques-uns conduiront d’autres à travers ces cours.

Le “Point de Mission” à Brisas del Bosque

Notre église a un point de mission dans un secteur de la ville appelée Brisas del Bosque. Le frère qui donne le leadership est un évangéliste, mais sans habileté pastoral ou pour l’enseignement. En plus, il n’a fait que la troisième année à l’école. Il lit avec difficulté. Cette œuvre a commencé il y a quelques années, mais n’a pas vraiment progressé. Une couple de membres de l’église mère, ensemble avec notre Pasteur, sont en train d’étudier comment établir cette œuvre.

Homilétique à Iglesia Bautista Nuevo Pacto

Le Pasteur de Iglesia Bautista Nuevo Pacto, Francisco García, m’avait parlé l’an dernier au sujet de la possibilité d’enseigner l’homilétique à un groupe dans son église. Ceci a finalement vu le jour, et il y a deux semaines j’ai débuté avec un groupe de dix élèves. Ils sont assez variés dans leur habileté et niveau d’instruction, et pourtant ce sera un défi. Mon idée est de former ceux qui sont mieux préparés, mais sans décourager les autres.

Cours de BILD pour les pasteurs de notre région.

Six pasteurs continuent à suivre les cours de BILD le samedi matin, avec le pasteur Hector qui conduit les cours. Ils ont passé à travers les cours des Actes, les Épîtres de Paul, la Doctrine, et le Leadership. Nous ferons une pause en décembre, pour reprendre les cours en janvier. Ils travaillent avec diligence sur leurs projets, et en dépit d’un niveau assez bas d’instruction pour quelques-uns, j’ai trouvé qu’ils produisent du bon travail, démontrant une bonne compréhension de la matière qu’ils étudient.

Graduation à Chimaltenango, Guatemala

Durant la dernière semaine de novembre, j’étais à Chimaltenango, avec Celso et Felix (coordinateur pour l’Amérique Centrale). Le groupe initial a passé à travers la première série de cours de Principes Fondamentaux. Nous les avons reconduits à travers la matière qu’ils avaient étudiée, et chaque élève a écrit un bref résumé de chacun des vingt principes. Ils ont fait du bon travail. Trois de ces élèves ont déjà commencé d’autres groups d’élèves de « deuxième génération ». Ainsi nous avons eu une cérémonie de graduation pour ces élèves de première génération. Cela a été un moment très spécial pour eux, et nous espérons que d’autres voudront se joindre à eux. Nous espérons aussi que quelques-uns de ces élèves pourront conduire des groups ailleurs dans le pays.

Des élections paisibles

Il y avait eu des menaces de violence de la part d’un des partis, s’ils ne gagnaient pas les élections, mais cela n’a pas eu lieu, heureusement. Une réponse à la prière! Le Parti National (Conservateur) a gagné la présidence. La chef du partie LIBRE (une séparation radicale du parti Libéral)  a réclamé la victoire en s’autoproclamant présidente, et semble avoir été en train de provoquer ses suiveurs à l’action, mais cela ne s’est pas réalisé. Le parti Libéral (assez conservateur, mais pas autant que les Nationalistes) a été plutôt affaiblie dans cette élection et a été réduit à la troisième place, et le PAC (Partie Anticorruption), un parti flambant neuf, est entré en quatrième place avec des résultats assez respectables. (Ils consistaient surtout en des politiciens novices, ce qui plaisait à un bon nombre de personnes). Il n’y a aucun parti avec une majorité absolu au Congrès, ce qui, à ce point, semble être un développement sain. Les chrétiens évangéliques ici, comme au Canada, ont appuyé différents partis, ce qui ne semble pas avoir causé d’hostilité quelconque entre eux. Ainsi, en général, c’était une élection paisible, même si non pas tous sont heureux avec les résultats.

Un nouveau blog espagnol avec des sermons et méditations

En novembre j’ai commencé un nouveau blog en espagnol, publiant des sermons et méditations que j’ai faits, généralement en forme de points pour que des prédicateurs ici puissent les adapter et utiliser selon le besoin. 5. Que la paix continue (au niveau politique) dans ce pays, et la sagesse pour le nouveau gouvernement en traitant avec les nombreux problèmes du pays.

October and November Activities

These last two months we have been busy in Siguatepeque, Honduras, and in Chimaltenango, Guatemala. This period has also been marked by a much contested election, for the national government as well as municipal governments.

With the Children’s Home

For a little more than two months now, we have had Roberto in our home. He is 17, and the Vida y Libertad team are looking for another option for him.  We have had some good conversations with Roberto about his spiritual state, as we have a family worship with him. At each Bible reading we each share what we found that touches our lives, and we each choose a verse to memorize before the next family worship. Roberto has been getting into the spirit of it.

Lise has been to the Home a few times to have Bible studies with the personnel. Saturday morning, November 30^th, she accompanied ten children from the Home to a day camp, and ended up staying for the day as she was needed to help with the program. (Central Americans are great at relationships, but organization is often not the strong point).

With the church

Lise continues to teach a Sunday School class, along with another lady (they take turns), and participates in the AWANA program teaching the “ositos” (bear cubs). Both John and Lise participate with the Men’s and Women’s groups on Friday nights. John occasionally preaches in the men’s group, and Lise was to preach in the women’s group Friday night, but that evening was turned into a wake as a lady in the church died that day.

Thelma

Thelma was operated for a cancer last January, and was given about three months to live. She fought her battle against cancer all year, at one point there seemed to be hope, but then had to go through a second series of chemotherapy. She left us to be with the Lord Friday morning November 29^th. A wake was held that night, and the church was packed – standing room only. The pastor, Hector, preached an excellent, compassionate sermon, in which he presented the gospel clearly. Saturday morning, November 30^th, was the funeral service and burial. Once again, many friends and relatives were exposed to the gospel both in the funeral service and in the graveyard.  Pray for her husband, Francisco, who has handled it well, but who will certainly have a difficult time of it. They have two children, Daniel and Yvette, who are in their early teens. This must be a terrible ordeal for them to lose their mother at that age.

First Principles in Siguatepeque

We are continuing with the First Principles courses in the Hermon Baptist church, having completed the first series of courses. A graduation is planned for December 22^nd. It is really encouraging to see the enthusiasm of the students. Fabricio is really excited about this, applying the material to his life, and looking forward to leading others through the course. Pastor Hector has decided to use this series as the official discipleship program, planning to take older believers as well as all new believers through it. So this first group will be the spearhead, with some of them leading others through the courses.

The “Mission Point” at Brisas del Bosque

Our church has a mission point in an area called Brisas del Bosque. The brother who is leading it is an evangelist, but has no pastoral or teaching ability. In fact, he only has a third grade education. This work has been going on for several years, but really has not progressed. A couple of members of the mother church, along with our pastor Hector, are studying ways of establishing that work better.

Homiletics at Iglesia Bautista Nuevo Pacto

The pastor of Iglesia Bautista Nuevo Pacto, Francisco García, had talked to me last year about the possibility of teaching a Homiletics course (the art of preaching) to a group in his church. This has finally materialized, and two weeks ago I began with a group of ten students. They are quite varied in their ability and level of education, so this will be a bit of a challenge. My idea is to train those who are most prepared, without discouraging the others.

BILD courses for regional pastors.

Six pastors continue to follow BILD courses ever Saturday morning, with Pastor Hector facilitating. They have gone through the Acts curse, Pauline Epistles, Doctrine, and Leadership. We will be taking a pause in December and begin again in January. They are diligent in working on their projects, and in spite of a lack of education for some, I have found that they produce good work, showing understanding of what they are studying.

Graduation in Chimaltenango, Guatemala

During the last week of November, I was in Chimaltenango, with Celso and Felix (coordinator for Central America). The initial group had gone through the first series of the First Principles course. We led them through the material they had done, and each student wrote a short summary of each lf the twenty lessons. They did good work. Three of these students have already started other groups of “second generation” students. So we held a graduation ceremony for these first generation students. It was a very special moment for them, and we are hopeful that others will want to join. We are also hoping that some of these students will be able to lead groups in other parts of the country.

Peaceful elections

There had been some promises of violence on the part of one of the parties, if they did not win the election, but that has not happened, happily. An answer to prayer! The National party (Conservative) won the presidency, The leader of the LIBRE party (a radical breakoff from the Liberal party) has claimed victory, and seemingly tried to provoke her followers into action, but that has not materialized. The Liberal party (fairly conservative but not as much as the Nationalists) was considerable weakened, and is now a third party, and the PAC (Anticorruption Party), a brand new party, came in fourth place with a respectable showing. (They were mostly untried politicians, which appealed to some).  So there is no absolute majority for any party in Congress, which, at this point, seems to be a healthy development. Evangelical Christians here, as in Canada, voted for different parties, which caused no hostility among them that I could discern. So in all, it was a peaceful election. even though not everyone is happy with the results.

5. Continued peace (politically) in the country, and wisdom for the new government in dealing with the nation’s many problems.
