Thoughts, messages, news, while living in Honduras.

End of 2012 - A Year of Change
Another year approaching its end!
It has been a year of change for Lise and I.
Just a bit before the year began, we moved to Drummondville, Quebec, while awaiting our departure for Honduras. During that time we had the joy of visiting several churches in Quebec and Ontario, and connecting with long-time friends.
On the morning of March 6th, we boarded the plane for Honduras, arriving in early afternoon. We stayed for a few days in the home of Dr. Nasrallah, an MD who works in the evangelical hospital of Siguatepeque.
On March 9th we moved into our present home, a nice little house with an aluminum roof, a nice yard – sometimes invaded by noisy roosters :) .
John
During this time John visited Guatemala, San Salvador, and La Ceiba, in Honduras, to participate in facilitating BILD courses. He also joined our local pastor, Hector Villatoro, in facilitating two BILD courses for the pastors in our department (province) of Comayagua.
In our local church he gave a Homiletics course to two different groups of members, and a course on Inductive Bible study to one group. It has been timely for one of our members, Oswaldo Enrique Melgar, who announced in the beginning of this month that he will be leaving for the island of Roatan, where he will be planting a church. (We might go out to visit him for a week some time during the year, to teach a course). John had him help teach Homiletics to the second group.

Lise
Lise has not been idle during this time. She has been helping out with the local AWANA program, and did a series of Bible studies for the workers at the Vida y Libertad children’s Home. Several ladies expressed their appreciation, and at least one shared with her how she was trying to put in practice what Lise had been teaching. Lise has also been developing a relationship with some local children who come to see her every week. She has them practice reading, gives them a snack, and has them play some table games. Francis, a little girl who has been repeating grades and seemed to be a hopeless case as far as being able to read was concerned, was the first of this group. Lise had her eyes checked, and then had her come and read to her regularly (at first, almost daily). Last week, we learned that she has passed her grade! (Honduran public schools end the school year in December, and begin again in February). Francis’s success was attributed to the time Lise spent working with her. I think one thing that helped greatly was the way Lise instilled confidence in the little girl.
She also worked with two Saturday "brigades" going out from the church to very poor areas to give out free medical attention, as well as clothes. It was shocking to see how little some of these people had.
In the new year, Lise will be teaching a Sunday School class in our local church.
Our Other Interest
Roberto, one of the boys we sponsor, has spent a fair bit of time in our home. He is having a good deal of difficulty in school, and apparently will be changing schools again in February. He’s a good boy, with a lack of confidence in himself. During the holidays, he is working in a sawmill. He and another boy, Orlin, are staying with us for a couple of days at Christmas.
Roberto
Prayer Requests
When you pray for us, please remember:
1. Our next move into another apartment (closer to town, and a bit safer) in February.
2. Oswaldo, as he begins a new ministry in Roatan.
3. Roberto, as he starts once again in a new school, that he might develop some self-confidence.
4. A new group of members who will be starting in the BILD courses in the new year. They will begin with the First Principles series. A few will have a crash course in how to facilitate these, early in the year.
5. As always, safety as we travel, and even as we walk into town.
We wish you all a merry Christmas, and a happy and prosperous new year! Thank you for praying for us!

October Activities (Version française après celle-ci)
October activities
October began with the earth-shaking news that I had turned 63 years old! How time flies! 47 years of true Life included in that!
Lise and I continue to keep busy.
Lise has been doing a Bible study every second Friday morning with the employees at the Children’s Home. This has led to some meaningful conversations with individuals.
Lise has also been helping out four local children, two of whom come to her for practice in reading. They are Osiris, Litzi, Francis and Carlos. While one practices reading, the others play in the yard. Then they all come in for a snack. Please pray that this will lead to help in the spiritual realm as well. Francis has been attending AWANA, (called OANSA here) where Lise also helps out. (When we walk along the street, every once in a while a child will call out to her: “Hello profe” for “teacher”).
Guatemala
In the second week of October I travelled to Guatemala City to teach First Principles to a group of students there. What I do is start them off on a course, and their pastor carries on with them after I leave. It’s great to see the hunger for knowledge among believers of a variety of education-backgrounds.
Siguatepeque
Here in Siguatepeque I have been helping teach a couple of BILD courses to a group of pastors from around the province. We finished the Acts course, and are now in the Pauline Epistles (which so far I’ve been teaching alone). Also, in the local church, I had the opportunity of teaching a Homiletics course (how to preach) to a number of leaders and potential leaders in our local church. On the first Sunday of October, we gave out diplomas in the evening service. Several others asked if they could also take the course, so we now have a second group taking the course. This time I’m team-teaching with Oswaldo, one my students first time around, who did quite well in his course. By helping teach, he is catching the idea even more.
On every Friday evening we have a men’s meeting, and on the third Friday of October it was held in our home. Carlos, one of my Homiletics students from the first course, preached. It is very encouraging to see him growing in the Lord, and wanting to serve. He did quite well.
Carlos preaching in our apartment
I am now also teaching a course on Inductive Study of Colossians, the purpose being to teach people to study the Bible inductively. Most of my Homiletics students are taking it, as well as a number of others. Once this course is finished I hope to start the same group of students on the First Principles series. I would like to see them not only take this series of discipleship courses prepared by BILD International, but also have a number of them eventually start teaching others. (One of my pastor-students is now leading a First Principles group in his church).
El Salvador
I was supposed to be in El Salvador for a BILD leadership course with a group of pastors there this week, but that got postponed. Another date will probably be in the new year. Thank you for praying for our students in Guatemala, El Salvador, and here in Siguatepeque and area. As well, could you remember to pray for the children Lise is helping, and the children in the Children’s Home (whom a number of you have been sponsoring).

COURS D’HOMILÉTIQUE COMPLÉTÉ (English following this)

HOMILETICS COURSE COMPLETED
Monday night, the final night of our Homiletics course I’ve been teaching, ten of my students each preached a ten minute sermon, and I was quite pleased with the result.
One of those students, Oswaldo, will team teach with me if we start another Homiletics class.

Encouragements and Frustrations (à suivre en français)
Greetings all!
It’s been a while since I’ve posted in this blog. So I’ll begin with our July experience:
House repairs, and two days in a hotel.
We suddenly noticed the tiles on our kitchen floor were starting to move and crumble under our feet. We notified the owner, and the same day he had somebody tearing up some of the tiles. Three days later, we had to move out and stay in a hotel (at the owner’s expense) while the cement under the tiles was being repaired and smoothed out. As we were out for two nights, we stayed in two different hotels – a good way of checking out the hotels for future reference! Decent hotels are amazingly low priced here.Changing a roof on the children’s home
In the end of July, Doug Cambell and Eugene Murphy arrived, to change a roof on the building f the Children’s Home (There are three roofs, one had been changed already, and the other is pending a future project). Doug is one of the pastors of Great Village Baptist Church, in Nova Scotia. Doug and Eugene stayed in our home while Doug’s daughter, Ally, stayed at the Children’s Home. I spent most of my time with Doug and Eugene, getting in their way on the roof and helping when I could, and translating. Amazing how hot it can get, standing on a metal roof! I learned that sun block also needs to be applied to the lips. We were very grateful for Doug and Eugene’s work. After they left, Ally remained for a couple more weeks. For one of those weeks she stayed in our home as she helped out at our local church clinic (Ally is a nursing student). We also took advantage of this time to do a bit of tourism, taking all three of them to Comayagua (capital of the department, and once capital of Central America), and taking Ally to Esperanza (highest city in Honduras) in the final week.
Turned Back at the Border
Second week of August, I was due to travel to El Salvador to participate in a week’s teaching of First Principles to a group of pastors there. I made sure I had my papers in order. Returning from my former trip to El Salvador in May, I was given a new three-month permit for temporary stay in Honduras (permanent residence application still in process), and was informed there would be absolutely no problem during those three months for travelling around. Our lawyer told me the same thing. However, when I got to the border, I learned that my paper was only good for Honduras, that according to the surrounding countries, El Salvador included, my entry was last March, and that my permit had run out in May! So I had to take a bus back home to Siguatepeque. I had been travelling since 6:00 am, and got back as far as San Pedro Sula a little after 8:00 pm. Too late to travel by bus to Siguatepeque, I had to stay overnight in a hotel, . I had my first meal of the day at about 9:30 pm. Got home by noon the next day. It seemed to be a tremendous waste of time and money. Also, I had had to cancel Monday night’s Homiletics class in order to go to El Salvador. We believe God has a purpose in everything – we just aren’t always sure what His purpose is! It wasn’t even “tribulation” enough to “work patience!” (Romans 5). But then again, I can be thankful for that!New opportunities
I had been concerned for some time about the lack of serious Biblical content in the preaching in one of the mission points. Not because of a lack of willingness on the part of the man preaching, but more on the lack of ability. After coming to know the Lord, he went to night school and worked his way up to a third grade education). I broached the subject of a course on Homiletics that I could offer, and then approached the pastor of the church to see if he felt it would be good to offer some of the people in the church. He agreed enthusiastically. I expected to have from two to four students. Fifteen enrolled, and thirteen of those have stayed the course. It is a course on expository preaching. During that course I have sought to bring some to sense their need to learn how to study the Bible. I may soon be offering a course I prepared on “Inductive Study of Colossians”, a “how-to” course which I prepared, modelled to a great extent on the SEMBEQ courses on Inductive Study of Mark and Inductive Study of Romans. Others have shown interest in the Homiletics course, and I may be taking a second group.I’ve also been team teaching the BILD Acts course with pastor Hector every second Saturday morn-ing. The students are pastors from the surrounding region, with a very varied understanding of the concepts.
Lise was asked to give a weekly Bible study to the ladies who work at the Children’s Home. She began last week and was encouraged by the reception.
Weather
The “Rainy season” has finally got “rainy”! Every afternoon and evening, it seems to rain unceasingly. However this doesn’t seem to affect the temperature much, which is warmer than usual for this season.Outside interests
Like most Quebecers, we are closely watching the election there, and praying that the outcome will be the best for all. It would be quite a challenge to decide who to vote for if we were there! As well, it is quite interesting to follow the political process in the USA. It looks as though it will be a hard fought election, and if we are to believe the two sides, the outcome will make a big difference one way or another. And here in Honduras, they different political parties are in process of primaries, preparing to choose their next president. An election I know even less about! I imagine as the day approaches there will be a good deal of excitement in the air. Right now what we notice is mostly cynicism.
