¡Ven, y Ve!

Juan 1:29 Al día siguiente vio a Jesús que venía hacia él, y dijo: He ahí el Cordero de Dios que quita el pecado del mundo.

“¡Ven, y ve!”  “¡Mira!”  parece ser una de las herramientas más eficaces en el evangelismo.

A veces podemos usar métodos muy complicados al presentar el evangelio. Obviamente, la gente necesita aprender de qué se trata el evangelio: lo que hizo Jesús por nosotros, quién es Jesús, etc. Sin embargo, ¡la invitación inicial en el evangelismo puede, en realidad, ser algo muy sencillo!  ¡Una invitación entusiasmada a encontrar a Cristo mismo! ¡Una invitación para que una persona aprenda por si mismo quién es Jesús! Cualquier cristiano puede hacer eso.

¿Ha sido usted tocado por Jesús? ¿Está usted asombrado por él? ¿Le salvo a usted? ¿Le perdonó? ¿Le liberó? Y eso, ¿le excita a usted? Entonces, comunícalo a la gente. Comunica su entusiasmo sobre Jesús, e invita a la gente a aprender por sí mismo sobre Jesús. Será seguramente la herramienta de evangelismo más eficaz que usted podrá jamás utilizar.

Viens et Vois!

“Viens et vois!”  “Voilà!”  parait être un des meilleurs outils pour l’évangélisation!!

Quelquefois nous utilisons des moyens très compliqués de présenter l’évangile. Évidemment, les gens à qui nous présentons l’évangile ont besoin d’apprendre de quoi il s’agit. Ils ont besoin d’apprendre ce que Jésus a fait pour nous; qui est Jésus, etc. Toutefois, l’invitation initial dans l’évangélisation peut, en effet, être très simple!  Une invitation enthousiaste à rencontrer Jésus-Christ lui-même! Une invitation à une personne à découvrir pour Lui-même qui est Jésus! N’importe quel croyant peut faire ça.

As-tu été touché par Jésus? As-tu été étonné par Lui? Est-ce qu’Il t’a sauvé? Est-ce qu’Il t’a pardonné? Est-ce qu’Il t’a libéré? En es-tu excité? Alors, laisse-le savoir aux gens. Communique ton enthousiasme pour Jésus, et invite les gens à le découvrir pour eux-mêmes. C’est probablement l’outil le plus efficace d’évangélisation.

Come and See!

John 1:29 The next day John saw Jesus coming to him, and said, "There is the Lamb of God, who takes away the sin of the world!”  (Or “Behold”, “Look!”)

John 1:35-37 The next day John was standing there again with two of his disciples, when he saw Jesus walking by. "There is the Lamb of God!" he said. The two disciples heard him say this and went with Jesus.

John 1:38-39  Jesus turned, saw them following him, and asked, "What are you looking for?" They answered, "Where do you live, Rabbi?" (This word means "Teacher.") "Come and see," he answered. (It was then about four o'clock in the afternoon.) So they went with him and saw where he lived, and spent the rest of that day with him.

John 1:45-46   Philip found Nathanael and told him, "We have found the one whom Moses wrote about in the book of the Law and whom the prophets also wrote about. He is Jesus son of Joseph, from Nazareth." "Can anything good come from Nazareth?" Nathanael asked. "Come and see," answered Philip.

John 4:29  "Come and see the man who told me everything I have ever done. Could he be the Messiah?"

“Come and see!”  “Look!”  Seems to be one of the most effective tools in personal evangelism!

Sometimes we can have some very complicated means of presenting the gospel. Obviously, people do need to learn what the gospel is all about: what Jesus did for us, who Jesus is, etc. However the initial invitation in personal evangelism can actually be very simple!  An enthusiastic invitation to meet Christ Himself! An invitation to a person to find out for himself about Jesus! Any Christian can do that.

Have you been touched by Jesus? Are you amazed by Him? Did He save you? Did He forgive you? Did He free you? Are you excited about that? Then let people know. Communicate your enthusiasm about Jesus, and invite people to find out for themselves about Him. It’s the probably the most effective evangelistic tool.

News from Spring, 2013

Correction

Before starting this update, I need to correct some faulty information. It has come to my attention that I have apparently been leading the training of several hundred pastors and leaders in Honduras! The information was published quite innocently, in good faith, but was totally mistaken. The truth is, a few years ago, Hannibal Muhtar started to lead a group of leaders through the BILD process, and this caught fire. The Baptist Convention of Honduras decided to adopt this as their pastoral and leadership training system, beginning with First Principles and carrying on with Leadership courses. As a result, it is true that the number of people who have benefited could be counted in the hundreds. Only this happened mainly before my time! My purpose here has been to help, serve, encourage, motivate churches and leaders and churches that are using these courses, and to encourage new ones to get on board, as well as old ones to get back on board. And to mentor where possible. This program is not only in Honduras, but also in Guatemala and in El Salvador. If funds were available, there is also a local association of churches in Nicaragua that would like help in this. The leadership of this program, both for Honduras and for Central America, is Honduran, and not foreign.

Now that we have that behind us, a bit of news:

La Ceiba

The April trip to Guatemala was cancelled. However in May I joined Felix Zaldivar in La Ceiba, where there is a large group of leaders and pastors taking First Principles courses. These leaders are "First Generation". Several of them are already leading groups in their own churches, or in associations of churches, in the region around. It is really thrilling to see the growth of this movement among the Garrifunos (Hondurans of African descent, who have their own language), residents of La Mosquicia (indigenous Honduran people) and Hondurans of European descent. Translation of the material is being worked on.

40 Years!

Lise and I "celebrated" our 40th wedding anniversary on May 26th. She has been so patient with me all those years! We were not able to go out to celebrate, as Lise was under the weather.

Graduation!

We were very happy and proud to be able to watch our daughter Annie's graduation ceremony on line, as she received her BA in teaching, at Bishops University, as well as prizes in Modern Languages and in French.  Congratulations Annie! We wish we could have been there in person.

Health Concerns

Lise has been struggling with extreme tiredness among other more unpleasant stuff. She was hospitalized for a few days last summer, and seemed to be doing well since then, but has been having difficulty again these last few weeks. She is being followed by a good Christian doctor here at the Hospital Evangélico.

For my part, I went for a biopsy of a lump in my thyroid this afternoon. Truth be told, I was more afraid of the needle in my throat for the biopsy than of any possible results of it! I will have news on that one in a week or so. However as the lump is small, in the worst case it will have been caught very early. What is most likely is that it is a ball of fat or a benign cist.

Corrections

Avant de commencer cette mise à jour, j'ai besoin de corriger un peu d'information erronnée. Je viens d'apprendre qu'apparemment je donnais le leadership à la formation de centaines de pasteurs et leaders au Honduras! (Je ne savais pas ça!) L'information a été publiée innocemment, de bonne foi, mais c'était erronnée. La vérité est ce qui suit: Il y a quelques années,  Hannibal Muhtar, du Canada, a commencé à conduire un groupe de leaders ici à travers des cours de BILD. Le processus a pris feu, et la Convention des Églises Baptistes au Honduras a décidé d'adopter ce processus comme étant la formation officielle pour leurs leaders et pasteurs, commençant avec les Principes Fondamentaux et continuant avec les cours de Leadership. Comme résultat, on pourrait bien compter dans les centaines le nombre de personnes qui a bénéficié de ces cours déjà. Seulement, ceci a eu lieu avant mon temps! Mon but ici c'est d'aider, encourager, motiver les leaders et les églises qui utilisent ces cours, d'encourager de nouveaux à embarquer dans le processus et des anciens à réembarquer quand c'est nécessaire. Et faire du mentorat quand c'est possible. Ce programme a lieu non seulement au Honduras, mais aussi au Guatemala et au Salvador. Si les fonds étaient disponibles, il y a aussi une association locale d'églises au Nicaragua qui aimerait bénéficier de ceci. Le leadership de ce programme, autant pour le Honduras comme pour l'Amérique Centrale, est hondurien et non pas étranger.

Maintenant que ça c'est clair, un peu de nouvelles:

La Ceiba

Le voyage en avril au Guatemala a été annulé. Toutefois au mois de mai j'ai rejoint Felix Zaldivar à La Ceiba, où un grand groupe de pasteurs et leaders suivent des courss de Principes Fondamentaux. Ces leaders sont de "Première Génération".  Plusieurs dirigent déjà des groupes dans leurs propres églises, ou dans des associations d'églises dans la région alentour. C'est vraiment excitant de voir la croissance de ce mouvement parmi les Garrifunos (Honduriens de descendance africaine, qui ont leur propre langue), les résidents de la Mosquicia (indigènes) ainsi que Honduriens de descendance européenne. I l y a du travail en train d'être fait pour traduire le matériel.

Lise et moi avons "célébré" notre 40ième anniversaire de mariage le 26 mai. Elle a été si patiente avec moi durant toutes ces années! Nous avons du remettre notre sortie de célébration à plus tard, puisque Lise n'était pas en forme.

Graduation!
Nous étions très heureux, et fiers, de pouvoir voir la graduation d'Annie en ligne par internet. Elle a reçu son Bac en esneignement à l'Université Bishops, en plus de recevoir des prix en Langues Modernes et en Français.  Félicitaitons Annie! Nous aurions bien aimé être là en personne!

Questions de Santé

Lise lutte avec une grande fatigue, ainsi que d'autres choses moins agréables encore. Elle avait été hospitalisé pendant quelques jours l'été passé, et semblait aller bien depuis ce temps-là, mais depuis quelques semaines elle a de la difficulté. Elle est suivie par un bon médecin chrétien ici à l'Hôpital Évangélique.

Pour ma part, on m'a fait une biopsie pour une bosse dans la thyroide cet après-midi. Je dois avouer que j'étais plus troublé par l'idée de l'aiguille dans ma gorge pour la biopsie que pour le possible résultat de la biopsie! J'aurai des nouvelles dans environ une semaine. Toutefois, puisque la bosse est petite, dans le pire des cas ce serait attrapé dans les débuts. Le plus probable est que ce soit une boule de graisse ou un quiste bénin.

Catching up!

These last couple of months have been rather busy, and I’m afraid I haven’t kept up with giving news!

Evangelism in Guatemala

I wrote about an upcoming evangelistic event in Guatemala with Tony Anthony and the Avanti team. This was from March 14^th to 24^th.  Every day, often morning, afternoon and evening, we were speaking to groups in schools, rehabilitation centres, churches, and parks. Tony Anthony (see his book: “Taming the Tiger”) was the main speaker, but was also accompanied by John Lawson, who heads up Avanti’s prison ministry, and Ryan Mays, a young man interning with them. My job was to translate, whenever a local interpreter was not available, which was most of the time.

The gospel was clearly preached to thousands of people through these groups, and was very much appreciated, In at least a couple of the schools, where all of the students were gathered, the directors appeared at first to be a little concerned about what the students would be hearing. However at the end they were extremely enthusiastic, and were hoping for a repeat in another year. And yet, the way of salvation had been as clearly presented as could be.

One event that nearly didn’t happen was Tony speaking on the Guatemalan television station. A letter from a critic in England had been sent to the Evangelical Alliance of Guatemala casting doubt on Tony’s ministry, and as a result, the plans for the television presentation had been put on hold. However, after the Evangelical Alliance of the United Kingdom wrote a letter of support, he was given full freedom for an hour on a television channel that was expected to have an active listening audience of half a million (potential of several millions).  Once again, the Gospel was presented very clearly.

One might wonder how useful such evangelism would be in Central America with such a high percentage of “evangelicals”. The truth is, evangelicalism in Central America is not always all that evangelical. With the immense popularity of the “prosperity gospel”, a large proportion of “evangelicals” here have no idea of what salvation is all about. The only advantage, which is great, is the open door for preaching the gospel.

While only eternity will tell us the results, a fairly large number responded to the Gospel invitation in each place we went. It was the same with school children, teenagers, adults, recovering drug addicts. The same message brought the same response.

The whole event of these two weeks was organized through a Canadian team from Église Baptiste L’Eau Vive, in Sherbrook, Quebec, along with pastor Luis Cruz, of Primera Iglesia Bautista in Guatemala City.

I returned home to Honduras and Lise on the 25^th, quite exhausted.

Siguatepeque

On April 7^th, I had the privilege of preaching in Iglesia Bautista Nuevo Pacto, on 2 Timothy 2:1-2. At the same time I talked to the church about the BILD First Principles course, which the pastor intends to start with his members.

In our own church, Iglesia Bautista Hermon, pastor Hector Villatoro has begun the First Principles course with a dozen members. We are now getting into the second book of the series, called “A Family of Families”. All are very enthusiastic about the series, and I believe this will result in other groups starting in the church.

El Salvador

April 15^th to 19^th, I was in El Salvador with a pastor from San Pedro, to meet with a group of pastors going through the second series of First Principles courses. They have also been doing Leadership courses.  We had a good time with the pastors, discussing the practical implications of the content of these courses.

A group of pastors from our province of Comayagua continues to go through the Leadership courses, now studying Essentials of Doctrine.  They find this particular course to be much drier and more difficult than the others, but are persevering.

Family:

• Lise is wearing a brace for her back, in an attempt to partially correct a problem she has had for many, many years. She finds it particularly uncomfortable at night.
• She helps teach a Sunday School class and has been involved with AWANA for the past year.
• Melodie continues to work with the Children’s Home – “Vida y Libertad”, just outside of Siguatepeque. Some of the older children have left, two are attending university in Tegucigalpa, the capital, which is a first for the home. Several new children have joined the “family”.
• Annie, in Sherbrook, Quebec, will graduate from university on June 1^st with her teacher’s degree as well as a BA. She continues to work with Child Evangelism Fellowship.
• Samuel works with “La Maison du Père” in Montreal. It is a humanitarian work among itinerants.
• Richard continues with his job as one of the directors of SODEMA.  He trains those who train those people whom you call when you need help with your bank account, or with your telephone service, or with your computer. It involves a fair bit of travelling; he will be in Texas this month.
• Daniel continues to work in construction in Quebec City; he has been able to work mostly indoors this winter, which is a blessing. Claudia, Daniel’s wife, is a nurse. (I’ve heard it’s common for construction workers to marry nurses – would there be a connexion?)
• Elena, their daughter, had her second birthday in April. She’ll be three by the time we see her in person again. Praise the Lord for Skype!
• John and Lise: - our 40^th wedding anniversary on May 26^th! How patient Lise has been! We had made plans for a 3-day trip to Antigua, in Guatemala, but are now putting it off until Lise can be a bit more comfortable.
• We continue to have children from the Home visit us on weekends.
• Oh yes, I must not forget Muki. He is in good health. Muki is our Siberian Husky, a little over five months old. He's cute, affectionate, and very stubborn.

Prayer requests:

1. Thelma, a member of our church who is battling cancer. After her operation she was given about three months to live. That was at least three months ago, and her oncologists are now sounding quite optimistic. Thelma is a nurse who has been working for years with our church’s clinic.
2. Oswaldo, who left us to lead a small church on the islands of Roatan. In the short time he has been there, he has baptized several people, and has a group of 14 following First Principles. This is his first pastorate.
3. That funds and personnel will be available to bring BILD courses to other countries such as Nicaragua, and Mexico, where interest has been shown.

Quoique ces derniers mois ont été assez remplis, je crains que je n’aie pas été trop fidèle à donner des nouvelles!

Évangélisation au Guatemala

J’avais écrit concernant un évènement d’évangélisation que nous allions avoir au Guatemala avec Tony Anthony et l’équipe Avanti. Cela a eu lieu du 14 au 24 mars.  Chaque jour, souvent les matins, après-midi et soirées, nous parlions à des groupes dans les écoles, centres de réhabilitations, églises, et parcs. Tony Anthony (voir son livre: “Taming the Tiger” – je ne sais pas le titre en français, mais je sais que ça existe) était le locuteur principal, mais il était accompagné par John Lawson, qui dirige les ministères de prison de Avanti, et Ryan Mays, un jeune stagiaire avec eux. Mon travail était de traduire, quand un interprète local n’était pas disponible, ce qui était la plupart du temps.

L’évangile a été clairement présenté à des milliers de personnes à travers ces évènements, et a été bien apprécié. Dans au moins deux des écoles, où tous les élèves ont été réunis, la direction semblait, au début, un peu inquiète concernant ce qui se dirait. Toutefois à la fin ils étaient très enthousiastes, et espéraient une répétition dans une autre année. Toutefois l’évangile avait été présenté très clairement.

Un évènement qui n’a presque pas eu lieu: Tony était programmé pour parler à la télé. Une lettre de la part d’un critique en Angleterre avait été envoyée à l’Alliance Évangélique de Guatemala, mettant des doutes sur le ministère de Tony, et comme résultat les plans pour la présentation télévisée ont été mis en suspension. Toutefois, après que l’Alliance Évangélique du Royaume Uni ait écrit une lettre de soutien, on a donné pleine liberté pour une heure sur la télé. On estimait environ un demi-million de personnes à l’écoute, sur un potentiel de plusieurs millions. Encore une fois, le message de l’Évangile a été présenté très clairement.

Quelques-uns pourraient se demander à quel point l’évangélisation serait utile en Amérique Centrale avec un pourcentage si élevé d’ “évangéliques”. La vérité c’est que le mouvement évangélique en Amérique Centrale n’est pas toujours évangélique! Avec l’immense popularité de « l’évangile de prospérité », une grande proportion de soi-disant évangéliques n’ont aucune idée du salut. Le seul grand  avantage,  est la porte est grande ouverte pour prêcher l’évangile.

Quoique seulement l’éternité révèlera les résultats dans les cœurs, un assez grand nombre de personnes ont répondu à l’invitation de l’Évangile dans chaque place où nous sommes allées. Le résultat était semblable parmi les enfants d’école, les adolescents, les adultes, les toxicomanes en récupération, à chaque endroit où nous sommes allés. Le même message donnait la même réponse.

Tout cet évènement a été organisé par une équipe de l’Église Baptiste L’Eau Vive, à Sherbrooke, Québec, ensemble avec le pasteur Luis Cruz, de Primera Iglesia Bautista de la ville de Guatemala.

Je suis revenu chez nous au Honduras, pour rejoindre Lise, le 25, très épuisé.

Siguatepeque

Le 7 avril, j’ai eu le privilège de prêcher à Iglesia Bautista Nuevo Pacto, sur 2 Timothée 2:1-2. J’en ai profité pour parler à l’église des cours Principes Fondamentaux, de BILD, ce que le Pasteur a maintenant l’intention de commencer avec ses membres.

Dans notre église, Iglesia Bautista Hermon, le pasteur Hector Villatoro a commencé les Principes Fondamentaux avec une douzaine de membres. Nous avons maintenant commencé le deuxième livre de la série, appelé “Une Famille de familles”. Tous sont très enthousiastes pour la série, et je crois que cela aura comme résultat d’autres groupes dans l’église qui débuteront.

El Salvador

Du 15 au 19 avril, j’étais au Salvador avec un Pasteur de San Pedro Sula, pour rencontrer un groupe de pasteurs qui passent à travers la deuxième série de Principes Fondamentaux. Ils suivent, en même temps, des cours au niveau Leader.  Nous avons eu un bon temps avec les pasteurs, discutant des implications pratiques du contenu de ces cours.

Un groupe de pasteurs de notre département de Comayagua continue à suivre les cours de Leadership, en ce moment ils étudient les Essentiels de la Doctrine. Quoiqu’ils trouvent ce  cours-ci un peu plus sec et plus difficile que les autres, ils persévèrent.

Famille:

• Lise porte une ceinture dorso lombaire pour supporter son dos, dans un effort de corriger un problème qu’elle a depuis bien des années. Elle trouve cela plutôt inconfortable la nuit.  
• Elle aide à enseigner une classe d’École du Dimanche et elle est impliquée avec AWANA depuis presqu’un an.
• Melodie continue de  travailler avec le Foyer des Enfants – “Vida y Libertad”, à l’extérieur de Siguatepeque. Il y a des enfants qui ont grandi et sont partis, deux jeunes filles assistent à l’université à Tegucigalpa, la capitale, ce qui est une première pour le Foyer. Plusieurs nouveaux enfants ont rejoint la “famille.
• Annie, à Sherbrooke, Québec, va graduer de l’université le 1^er  juin, avec son diplôme d’enseignement et son Bac. Elle continue de travailler avec l’Association pour l’Évangélisation des Enfants
• Samuel travaille avec “La Maison du Père” à Montréal. C’est une organisation humanitaire qui travaille avec des itinérants.
• Richard continue avec son travail comme un des directeurs de SODEMA.  Il forme ceux qui forment les gens à qui vous appelez quand vous avez besoin d’aide avec votre compte bancaire en ligne, ou avec votre service téléphonique, ou avec votre ordinateur. Il voyage beaucoup avec cela; il sera au Texas ce mois-ci.
• Daniel continue de travailler dans la construction à Québec; il a pu travailler principalement à l’intérieur cet hiver, ce qui est une bénédiction. Claudia, son épouse, est infirmière. (J’entends dire que les travailleurs de la construction se marient souvent avec des infirmières – y aurait-il une connexion?)
• Elena, leur fille, a eu son deuxième anniversaire en avril. Elle aura trois ans avant que nous la voyions de nouveau en personne. Merci Seigneur pour Skype!
• John et Lise: - notre 40^ième anniversaire de mariage le 26 mai! Quelle patience Lise a eu! Nous faisions des plans pour un voyage de 3 jours à Antigua, au Guatemala, mais nous remettons ce voyage pour un temps où Lise pourra être plus confortable.
• Nous continuons de recevoir des enfants du Foyer Vida y Libertad les fins de semaine.
• Et oui! Muki va bien, il est en assez bonne santé maintenant. Muki est notre husky siberien d'un peu plus de 5 mois. Très affectueux, et absolument entêté.

Requêtes de Prière:

1. Telma, un membre de notre église qui lutte avec le cancer. Après son opération on lui avait donné environ trois mois à vivre. Cela fait maintenant un bon trois mois, et ses oncologues sont maintenant beaucoup plus optimistes. Telma est une infirmière qui travaille depuis des années dans la clinique de l’église.
2. Oswaldo, qui nous a laissé pour diriger une petite église naissante sur l’île de Roatan. Depuis le peu de temps qu’il y est, il a baptisé quelques personnes, et il a un groupe de 14 qui suivent les Principes Fondamentaux. C’est son premier pastorat.
3. Que des fonds et du personnel soient disponibles pour amener des cours de BILD à d’autres pays tels que Nicaragua et le Mexique où il y a eu de l’intérêt.
